Status & Recommendations
Inspection: September 18, 2026
Oil service, rotation, and a targeted steering recheck
Continue the 3,000-mile / 3-month oil-service plan for frequent short trips. Rotate the four road tires, check tread and cold pressure against the door placard, and repeat the loaded inspection of the front track bar, tie-rod ends, and ball joints.
Due at 187,620 mi or December 18, 2026 · whichever comes first
Front track-bar axle-end bushing
Early surface cracking is visible in the rubber, with no measurable looseness during the loaded inspection. No shimmy or steering pull was reproduced on the road test. Recheck at the next visit and plan replacement if deterioration or movement develops.
Recheck at the next oil service · sooner if steering looseness, clunking, or shimmy appears
Light oil dampness at the rear of the engine
The lower bellhousing area was lightly damp before cleaning. No fresh drip developed during the warm road test or the following stationary check. Record dipstick level between visits; repeat the cleaned-area inspection before choosing a gasket or seal repair.
Check the oil level monthly and before longer trips · inspect the area at the next service
Keep the cooling and driveline intervals on track
The January cooling-system work and June transmission, transfer-case, and axle services are current. The short-trip plan sets the next transmission and axle services at 193,980 mi, and transfer-case service at 211,980 mi, each with a June 2028 time limit. Check coolant level with the engine cold, look for leakage, and reassess intervals if towing, off-road use, or water crossings become frequent.
Next transmission / axles: 193,980 mi or June 2028 · transfer case: 211,980 mi or June 2028 · coolant: 208,060 mi or January 2028

- Transfer-case application fluid and SAE 80W-90 GL-5 axle lubricant.
- Both axle units confirmed open; no limited-slip friction modifier required.
- Normal warm shift quality and four-wheel-drive engagement on verification.
Fluid-service and verification notes
This was a pan / filter service, with a partial fluid exchange rather than a full-system exchange. Final transmission level was set using the hot dipstick range after cycling the selector and returning to Neutral. Cooler lines and accessible fittings were inspected for wetness; no active leak was found.
The transfer-case identification tag confirmed NP242. Fill plugs were freed before draining. Axle covers were removed for inspection and resealed; accessible gear surfaces had no visible abnormal pitting or damaged teeth. Breather paths were clear. A road test and post-drive recheck found no fresh fluid leakage.
Next transmission and axle services: 193,980 mi or June 12, 2028. Next transfer-case service: 211,980 mi or June 12, 2028. Use whichever comes first for each service; water intrusion or new symptoms will bring the inspection forward.
Brake renewal, steering repair & alignment
Resolved brake pulsation and a worn outer tie-rod joint, then checked alignment and braking behavior.
Work performed
- Replaced front pads and rotors; cleaned hub mounting faces.
- Replaced rear pads and serviced caliper slides.
- Exchanged brake fluid with fresh DOT 3 and checked hydraulic connections.
- Replaced the worn right outer tie-rod end.
- Set front toe after the steering repair and centered the steering wheel.

- Front pads measured 3 mm and rotor variation corresponded with the reported pulsation.
- Rear pads measured 3.5 mm; rear rotors were retained after dimensional inspection.
- No binding caliper slide, damaged hose, or hydraulic leak found.
- Parking brake held; brake pedal remained firm after bleeding.
- No pulsation or pull during post-service brake checks.
Brake and steering detail
Caliper boots were inspected and reusable hardware cleaned. Slides received compatible brake lubricant, with grease kept off friction surfaces. The rear parking-brake components were inspected while accessible and adjusted after reassembly.
The right outer tie-rod joint had visible movement before replacement. Adjacent joints were inspected under load and retained. The steering-wheel position was checked after toe adjustment, followed by a road verification and inspection of the installed joint and fastener retention.
Next brake-fluid exchange planned April 10, 2028, with lining, hydraulic, and steering inspections at each oil service.
Cooling-system restoration & belt service

Work performed
- Replaced the leaking water pump and inspected the mounting surface.
- Installed an application-matched 195°F thermostat and gasket.
- Replaced upper / lower radiator hoses, aging heater hoses, and radiator cap.
- Drained and cleaned the cooling system; refilled with a 50/50 conventional ethylene-glycol mix.
- Replaced the serpentine belt and checked pulley alignment and bearings.
- Completed oil / filter service and tire rotation.
Findings / verification
- Dried coolant trace originated at the water-pump weep area.
- Radiator core and tanks passed the inspection and were retained.
- Fan clutch, shroud, and pulley bearings had no actionable defect.
- Pressure test held; heater output and thermostat warm-up were normal.
- No cooling-system leakage at the post-drive recheck.
Cooling-system commissioning notes
The removed coolant's service age was unknown, so the system was cleaned before establishing a single conventional-coolant baseline. A premixed 50/50 solution was used, with no incompatible coolant blended into the fill. Hose routing and clamp positions were checked for contact with belts, fan components, and sharp edges.
Temperature was monitored through warm-up and a mixed road test. Cabin heat remained steady, the thermostat opened normally, and the system was rechecked after a full cooldown. The reservoir level was marked at the cold reference line for future checks.
Next coolant service planned at 208,060 mi or January 16, 2028. Belt and hoses will be inspected at each oil service.
Intermittent hot no-start diagnosis
Traced an intermittent restart problem to loss of the crankshaft-position signal during a heat-soak test.
Diagnostic process / repair
- Verified normal cranking speed, power supply, and engine grounds during the symptom.
- Recorded a stored P0320 and loss of the engine-speed signal during the hot no-start.
- Inspected sensor connector and harness routing; checked supply / ground.
- Replaced the crankshaft-position sensor with an application-matched part.
- Secured the harness clear of the exhaust and moving components.
Verification
- Crank signal returned after repair and remained stable during heat soak.
- Repeated hot restarts completed without extended cranking.
- No engine code returned during the verification drive.
- No recurrence reported at the January, April, June, or September visits.
Fault isolation and follow-up
The starting complaint was reproduced after bringing the engine to temperature and letting it sit. Power and ground remained present at the sensor, while the engine-speed signal dropped out during cranking. The harness and connector showed no repeatable contact fault during inspection.
After sensor replacement, the same warm-up and rest period were repeated. Multiple restarts completed normally, and subsequent service checks recorded normal hot-start behavior. The fault was documented as resolved with follow-up confirmation across later visits.
Battery replacement & cable rehabilitation
Established the starting-system baseline after a weak-battery complaint and visible terminal corrosion.
Work performed
- Replaced the failed battery with a Group 34 flooded battery rated at 700 CCA.
- Cleaned the tray, terminals, cable contact faces, and accessible engine / body grounds.
- Reinstalled the hold-down and protected exposed terminal surfaces.
- Checked loaded starter-circuit voltage drop and charging operation.
Findings / verification
- Removed battery failed the conductance test after charging.
- Cables were retained after loaded testing and corrosion cleanup.
- New battery measured 731 CCA; cranking voltage 10.46 V.
- Charging voltage stabilized at 14.18 V under load.
- Normal starts after installation; inspection record opened.
Electrical baseline notes
Ground contact surfaces were cleaned before tightening to preserve metal-to-metal contact. Protection was applied around the completed connection rather than between its clamped contact faces. Cable routing, battery restraint, and clearance to adjacent components were checked.
The starting and charging measurements became the comparison point for subsequent visits. September 2026 retesting measured 672 CCA, 10.02 V minimum during cranking, and 14.12 V charging under load, without an intermittent connection or abnormal settled key-off draw.
